World Dog Show in Bratislava – October 8.- 11. 2009

The Slovak capital Bratislava is only about 90 km from Mistelbach (1,5 hours drive). So this is the opportunity to experience the world dog show. Personally I have my doubts about using animals for beauty competitions, but as an animal lover I like the concentration on information about new products you find only on these exhibitions. Date: 8. – 11. October 2009

“Marley & me” Filmtheater Krone in Mistelbach from March,5th 09

Marley & Me by John Grogan is the true story of Grogan’s relationship with his Labrador retriever. Marley starts as a small puppy, but quickly develops into 97 pounds of destructive power. I am reading the book at the moment and am looking forward to the release of the Film in Austria upcoming March.
Krone Filmtheater in Mistelbach will show the Film starting March, 5th 2009.  Have a look at the trailer here
“Marley & Me by John Grogan is an engaging book that uses the story of a crazy dog as a framework for talking about life, love and the struggles of beginning a marriage, starting a family and making the most of every moment. This is a must-read for anyone who has ever loved a pet. Marley & Me, however, is for more than pet people. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good story.” (From http://bestsellers.about.com/od/nonfictionreviews/gr/marley_r.htm )

“Dog days”

With more than 30 ºC, we are in the middle of another hot summer in the Wine district. For weeks it’s raining in different parts of Austria, except for the north east, where we live in. Until my 30th I lived in Belgium, where complaining about the rainy weather became a kind of second life philosophy. Now I have to spend the next part of my life in absolute dryness. Life is not fair!

My dog “Zeno”, a chocolate Labrador, has even a heavier package to carry as he is wearing his brown fur coat!Although labs are originally from Canada, he seems to coop well with the climate here in central Europe. His surviving strategy is very simple. In the morning at 6:00 AM he gets up, walks slowly towards my bed and fixates me with his eyes. When I make the mistake to open one eye he hums once or twice, and when he starts nodding his nose upwards, it means: “Get up for my early walk!” The rest of the day he sleeps on a cool place in the house. At lunchtime he makes a two minutes walk in the garden and sleeps again until 6:00 PM. The humming scene repeats, except that I am usually not sleeping at that time of the day and the walk now is the so called “Late walk”.

Observing my dog’s “hot weather behaviour”during the dog days of this summer, it reminds me on a quote Milan Kundera once wrote:

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring–it was peace.”

Dog walking

For animal-lovers who don’t have the possibility to keep a dog at home, the animal shelter “Dechanthof” offers a great opportunity to have a close contact to cats or dogs. You can come on voluntary base from Wednesday to Sunday from 1 to 5 PM and take a dog for a walk in the nature around the Farm where the lost dogs are held or spend some time in the cathouse. My personal experience is a 100% positive one. As I have a Labrador who needs his walking hours, besides of my fulltime job, I do not go very often. The people who work there (and the dogs) are always very thankful if I come for a walk with one or two dogs. In the beginning I thought it would be difficult to confront myself with the “Poor “animals. Soon I discovered that they are not poor and going for a walk is always better for the animal not going out at all :-) . You can take your children, they will love it although they have to be accompanied of an adult.

Take some goodies, and have a joyful time.
