Who could think that the international coffee morning in Mistelbach would become such a success when we started in 2007? In those days I was just curious if there were other expats, living in the district, that I could have a nice chat with, maybe become friends. That was the first step in my survival program when I lived in Prague or Vienna before. Only in these capitals there were already international clubs where one could become a member of. Organizing an informal coffee was the easiest way. How surprised I am now that we had already about 60 visitors with 15 different nationalities. And every month again new faces show up. 50% of the coffee morning visitors are Austrian, the other 50% are english speaking foreigners. We have people who lived for a part of their life in other countries, came back to Austria and like to speak english or listen to other peoples expat experiences as well as foreigners who decided to stay for a while in the wine district. The newcomers are given a lot of practical advise where to find what in Mistelbach. We had some EVS girls (Evy from Leipzig, Leticia from Spain, Dagny from Iceland): By the way, EVS is not a new energy company but stands for European voluntary service! There are also some english teachers visiting . As the meetings are always the last Thursday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to noon, I am aware that it does not fit everybody
Also new activities were born on the coffee mornings. We started walking in the region, where a person who lives in the village guides us. This is really an activity I can recommend to learn to know the wine district from the inside out! We had a successful cookie exchange party before Christmas and are thinking about organizing a gallery gang. Let me know if you are interested.
Some people also met in private, became good friends, organized dog walks, dinner parties, museum and concert visits. I am very happy to hear about all this.
Last year we discussed to become an official organization, which we did not. All activities are free and open for everybody. The only point is of course that it is not so easy to spread the word. So if you are interested yourself or if you know somebody who could be interested, print out or forward the announcement that you will find on the right front side of my blog.
Thank you and hope to see you on the next coffee: Thursday, April 28 2011 at 10:00 a.m.
